Explore 4-H on Monday, November 14 at 6:00 at the Agricultural Conference Center. This group meets monthly and is targeted toward 5-9 year olds, exploring a variety of topics. By popular request, our theme will include pumpkins.

Youth Citizenship

Citizenship can be considered broadly as the collective action we take to address our common concerns (from 4-H Public Adventures). 4-H offers many ways for young people to be involved in such community and government process. "An important part of being civically engaged is asking what you can do for your country, as well as your school, neighborhood, town and county." (Civic Engagement: After-School Activities for Citizenship, Leadership and Service)

7th Annual 4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus on June 13-15, 2011, in Raleigh at the Sheraton Downtown

*Who can attend?*
100 - 170 North Carolina 4-H'ers, ages 14-19 and appropriate adults. All are selected by the application process. We are recruiting at least 2 per county - new or returning youth and adults.

4-H Camp 2011

4-H Camp Registration Open

It's never too early to begin enrolling for 4-H Camp for Summer 2011. Watauga County 4-H will escort a group of 8-14 year old campers to Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center. The center is located above Greensboro in Rockingham County, near Reidsville. The camping week is June 26-July 1. To guarantee a spot, register by January 28. The good news is you can reserve your spot with a $100.00 deposit and have until June to save up for the rest of the fee, which is $280.00 more (a total of $380.00). The fee covers meals, lodging, t-shirt, transportation to camp and more. Registration will continue beyond January 28, but spaces may not be guaranteed. Explore 4-H on Tuesday, March 15 at 6:00 at the Agricultural Conference Center. This group meets monthly and is targeted toward 5-9 year olds, exploring a variety of topics. Our theme this month will be animals.

4-H International Exchange Opportunities

Ready to expand your world? Consider the 4-H International Exchange program. You can start out small with the summer, month-long exchange program. You may host a 12-17 year old Japanese student if you have a child the same gender and within 2 years of age as the student. Norwegian, Argentina and Costa Rican 15-19 year old matches are available as well.

High-school, year long- matches are available for families. Host families do not have to have children of the same age or gender as the Exchange student.

If you are really adventurous, try the Outbound program. Opportunities are available for 13-19 year olds to travel to Japan, Finland, Australia, Argentina, and Costa Rica.

Deadline to participate is February 1.

4-H Project Record Time

It's time to compile your 2010 4-H club activities into 4-H Project Records. Keeping track of what you did is a great way to have a sense of accomplishment, and to create a nice "scrapbook" you can look back on. Plus, if you enter it into competition, you could win $50.00. Project Records are due January 28. Click Here for more information.

4-H College Scholarships

4-H College Scholarships.

There are many advantages to being involved in 4-H and one of them is it helps you prepare for college. One benefit in particular is the availability of 4-H scholarship funds.
High School Seniors 4-H participants may apply for scholarships. Over 70 different scholarships are offered, although some are restricted to certain criteria. Scholarship awards range in amounts from $500 to $2000.

If you are not a senior, it’s not too early to get ready to apply. Your scholarship is strengthened by the 4-H activities you participate in. So make some goals now!

The application form is due each year in mid-January. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, contact the 4-H office.
