National Youth Environmental Summit

Rising high school juniors and seniors interested in the environment.
July 20-24
Catawba College Campus, Salisbury, NC

Students will explore the concept of environmental leadership through the perspective of their own skills and interest in the arts, humanities, education, history, business, science and technology. They will learn how essential elements of these varied disciplines — creativity, expression, innovation, observation, experimentation and teamwork — are critical to their effectiveness as environmental leaders.

Video Contest

From Soil Science Society of America

Theme: World Soil Issues Important to Students

Present original, inspirational videos illustrating what soil means to you in your world. The deadline to submit the video and upload all signed permission/release forms is

August 1, 2011

Your video will exemplify how soil is used or viewed in global issues (climate change, health, economic, sociality), the impact of soil on local to world events, or how soil as a natural/ecological/environmental resource is utilized in “your world” (whatever that may be).

We encourage you to produce a video which is creative, imaginative, and inspirational -- one in which people will remember the message. The video must be your original, non-commercial work, and made recently (within the last year).

World Soil Issues Important to Students - one topic winner, $250 - open only to K-12 students

Like to create with a sewing machine or want to learn?

West District 4-H Fashion Revue & Sewing Camp will be held on June 18, 2011 at Haywood County Extension Center. Join others from our region for a great day of hands-on learning activities.

There will be a judged Fashion Show in the afternoon (entries need to be made before the event).

Registration is $10 per participant. This includes supplies for the day and a lunch.

Photography Contest


4-H Photography Contest

Capture and share your photographic skill with the 4-H photography contest.

Participants can enter one photo each in three categories:

"4-H in Action", "Nature's Beauty", "Patterns”

Entries will be submitted to the state 4-H photography contest (9-19 year olds).

Photos are due by June 15 and may be submitted in digital format.
