Strawberry Art Contest

Draw or paint a picture inspired by strawberries or your visit to a strawberry farm.

You can draw anything you want as long as it relates to strawberries or a strawberry farm. We especially appreciate pictures that show you have looked closely at strawberries or strawberry plants or visited a farm. We value creativity, imagination, design and composition, and good observation.

Deadline: Postmarked May 25, 2011. Winners will be announced by June 7th.

Grade grouping levels: Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8

Who may participate: All children in grades K-8 who live in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia (the states where most NCSA members

live). Entries may be made individually or through the child’s school. Children of NC Strawberry Association members and their relatives are eligible to enter the contest.

Prizes: Six to nine $25 prizes will be awarded, divided among the categories based on number of entries. Additional sponsored prizes or prize items may be added. Winning Entries and Honorable Mentions will be posted on the website of the North Carolina Strawberry Association (www.ncstrawberry.com).

Submitting your entry: Send your entry by mail to NCSA, 1138 Rock Rest Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312. To have artwork returned, you must send a self-addressed,

stamped envelope (not metered) with full postage required.

Additional details: Maximum artwork size is 8.5 x 11, though paper can be larger. Email entries or computer-generated art will not be accepted. All entries must be

­identified on the back with name, full address, and grade level. Please use the entry form provided. Entries sent by schools may use school address and email rather than students’. Results will be sent to the school and teacher if school address/email is given; make sure mail sent to these addresses June 7 will be received. Entries become the property of the NC Strawberry Association.

4-H International Exchange Opportunities

Ready to expand your world? Consider the 4-H International Exchange program. You can start out small with the summer, month-long exchange program. This involves hosting a 12-15 year old Japanese student, if you have a child the same gender and within 2 years of age as the student. Norwegian, Argentina and Costa Rican 15-19 year old matches are available as well.

High-school, year long- matches are also available for families. Host families do not have to have children of the same age or gender as the Exchange student.

If you are really adventurous, try the Outbound program. Opportunities are available for 13-19 year olds to travel to Japan, Finland, Australia, Argentina, and Costa Rica.

Hosting month-long Japanese students goes from July 14-August 19

Expectations: Families are encouraged to conduct their normal activities but to make sure that the student is introduced to the community and the family; ie, take student to the grocery store, have them visit the grandparents house if appropriate and close proximity, introduce them to neighbors and friends, go to 4-H meetings, take them to church if the family is a church goer etc... It is not required that the family plan special vacations.

Explore 4-H Monday, November 14th

Explore 4-H on Monday, November 14 at 6:00 at the Agricultural Conference Center. This group meets monthly and is targeted toward 5-9 year olds, exploring a variety of topics. By popular request, our theme will include pumpkins.

Youth Citizenship

Citizenship can be considered broadly as the collective action we take to address our common concerns (from 4-H Public Adventures). 4-H offers many ways for young people to be involved in such community and government process. "An important part of being civically engaged is asking what you can do for your country, as well as your school, neighborhood, town and county." (Civic Engagement: After-School Activities for Citizenship, Leadership and Service)

4-H Camp 2011

4-H Camp Registration Open

It's never too early to begin enrolling for 4-H Camp for Summer 2011. Watauga County 4-H will escort a group of 8-14 year old campers to Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center. The center is located above Greensboro in Rockingham County, near Reidsville. The camping week is June 26-July 1. To guarantee a spot, register by January 28. The good news is you can reserve your spot with a $100.00 deposit and have until June to save up for the rest of the fee, which is $280.00 more (a total of $380.00). The fee covers meals, lodging, t-shirt, transportation to camp and more. Registration will continue beyond January 28, but spaces may not be guaranteed.
